A dream

When I leave this place I will go home. I will go back to my girl, and our child, and our flat and the garden filled with entirely inappropriate toys from my brothers Fred and George, which we have to keep out of the baby's way. Perhaps at some point we'll marry; we've discussed it, of course, but neither one of us is in any rush.

Her name is Susanne. She's petite and dark-haired and until we had the baby, was involved with the Department of Magical Games and Sports at the Ministry. We've been together for three years.

The worst thing about this captivity is not the torment or the lack of food or the dungeon cell: it's missing my life. How much time has elapsed? How old is little Charlie? He was nearing his first birthday when they took me here. We named him after the brother I'm closest to; it seems so fitting. He loves his animals; his favourite toy is the stuffed dragon from his uncle Charlie, the one that puffs steam and roars.

I miss them. I miss them so much.

The door to the cell creaks open. This time, it's her. She can do what she wants but I will not give them the information they seek. They will never get it from me and I will die before I divulge it. Even if it means I'll never see Susanne or little Chas again.

I close my eyes and wait, expecting the worst.

Bill wakes with a start, heart pounding. It's been a long time -- he thinks -- since he dreamt of his captivity. He turns on the lamp quickly, looking around to be sure that this is real, that this room is real, that this is where he is.

He's not so sure he can stand much more of this.
